Pinewood Derby Race and a Duct Tape Wallet

  Alexander started cub scouts in the fall, and has enjoyed many events with the group.  Camping, going to the farm, parades,placing flags on Veterans graves, sorting food at the food pantry, caroling at the Nursing home and finally the Pinewood Derby Race!  I love the community service opportunities the cubscouts offers, and the pride they get from helping others.  There are tons of fun things too do also, which helps the boys develop confidence and life long friendships. 

 

The most recent activity was his Pinewood Derby.  He had to create a car and then race it against all of the other cubscouts.  I honestly didn't know what to expect until the day of the event.  I wasn't sure how it all worked.  When we got the box with his supplies to build the car at our first meeting, we didn't know much about what to do.  The box had a block of wood and some wheels......ummmm.....so we had pap and uncle TJ help shape the car with their fancy tools.  Daddy helped to paint the design, and put wheels on the car.  On Saturday, January 19, we took our car to the Derby.  Alexander's car wasn't very fast and lost all 3 races it was in....but we learned that we need to weight the car and do a little more investigating on how to make it go faster.  Next year, we hope to have a faster car!!

The finish line!  Alexander's car was actually 3rd in this race.  His car was the last to hit the wall before bouncing off.  Next year, we plan to do some more research so he can have a faster car! This is just our first year, so we didn't know very much about the competittion of the event.  Next year, we will be ready!!

 

This past weekend, Alex was flipping through his boy's life magazine from scouts and found a pattern for a duct tape wallet.  We ran to Walmart and got some green tape and used some of our grey tape to make it a little more colorful. 

Alex is measuring the tape, which he was working on in math at school anyway.  He got some extra practice.  He had to wear his goggles and apron from Lowes too.
